THE MEDICINE WHEEL

It is morning here in the desert, just outside of Santa Fe , New Mexico.

It is a place where my mind, body, spirit and emotions have found a rest. This is the 3rd week of a 4 week journey I have taken, post-pandemic, here out west. I drove across the country on May 24, with my partner, Jim. We stopped along the way to see public art, and the history of racial violence in our country in Tennessee, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas. Saw the old Route 66 motels, still lined up on the nearly defunct relic of a highway that had seen way better times. We settled in Santa Fe for about four days and then we rented a 1997 VW Camper-van for a 10 day adventure through Utah Sate Parks, with stops in Colorado and New Mexico. We went to Canyon-lands, Bryce Canyon, Capital Reef, Escalante, Kodachrome Basin, Monument Valley and Arches, in Utah. In Arizona, we paddled kayaks at Lake Powell.

The places we have seen have awakened me to the untold beauty and majesty of this land and it’s people. Sadly, due to Covid, all of the Native American lands are still closed and this precluded us from interacting with the rich and diverse inhabitants of the Navajo, Zuni, Pueblo, Ananzi cultures and more. Rest assured, I will return here as its always been a ‘heart-home’ for me where my body and mind are stilled and where love of every kind has an easier entry into my heart.

Here is the native American Medicine Wheel, said to bring harmony to all beings.

Please look at it and assess where you are in your life with the 4 directions. Make a promise to focus on each one over the next month and see if it brings more harmony to your life.
